Sustainability
As America’s first Climate Neutral certified distillery, we believe it's possible to make spirits that enrich the soil, rejuvenate the forest and refresh our air and water.
We believe there's no need to compromise the environment to obtain delicious flavor. We believe individual choices have the power to change the course of history. This is the vision that guides us as we constantly strive to do the right thing at every step. There are miles to go before we reach our destination, so we invite you to join our journey and learn more about our mission to create deeply sustainable spirits.
So what does it take?
To show our commitment to crafting sustainable spirits, we set a goal to become fully carbon neutral. We partnered with Climate Neutral to assess our climate impact - from our farmers’ fields, to our shops’ shelves, and everything in between. In 2021, we became America’s first Climate Neutral certified distillery.
Here are some of the steps we took to become Climate Neutral certified:
Energy:
100% of the electricity used in our building is provided by our solar array.
Our boilers run on renewable natural gas made from local byproducts from farms, breweries, cheesemakers and our own distillery.
Sourcing:
All of our grain is sourced from local organic or regenerative farmers, which allows us to foster soil health and minimize emissions from transportation.
We replaced all plastic in our packaging with cardboard made with high recycled content.
The majority of our bottles are made from 100% recycled glass.
The wood used for our Split Spirits line is sourced from unusable parts of trees that have already been felled, following sustainable forestry principles.
Waste:
All of our spent grains are sent to a biodigester to create clean electricity, meaning our distillery puts out less waste than an average residential home!
Building Efficiency:
The building envelope, windows and all pipes are highly insulated to ensure the most efficient use of energy possible.
We have opted to use motion-activated lights and natural light where possible to keep our distillery lit efficiently.
We installed separated-combustion space heaters where necessary that only pull in outside air, though we rarely use these heaters - the distillery is so well insulated that just the process heat is retained for days.
